Semi-Annual West Caldwell Water Department Hydrant Flushing Program

The West Caldwell Water Department conducts a semi-annual flushing of all fire hydrants in the spring and in the fall in the Township, between the hours of 8:00 PM and midnight, Monday through Friday. The purpose of this program is to remove iron sediment from the water mains in order to alleviate discoloration and reduction of flow, resulting in improved water quality.
2025 Spring Hydrant Flushing Program
Mayor Tempesta and Chairman Cecere of the Public Works Committee of the Township of West Caldwell announce that the Spring Hydrant Flushing Program will begin on Monday, March 31, 2025, on Mountain Avenue at the northern end of the Township and will proceed to the southern end of the Township at Beechtree Road. The program will require approximately eight (8) weeks to complete and will be carried out during weeknights between the hours of 8:00 P.M. and 12:30 A.M. It is necessary for proper maintenance of our water distribution system. The procedure provides an opportunity to test the Township’s fire hydrants and removes accumulated sediment from water mains.
Residents are urged to check that their water is running clear before starting any laundry during this time. If there are any questions about the program, please contact the Township Water Department at 973-226-2300, Ext. 3400.
Residents are reminded that the latest updates on the hydrant flushing program will be available on TV Channel 36/47 as well as the Town’s website, www.westcaldwell.com.

The Water Department currently reads all water meters by means of a remote radio unit. The meter is directly wired to a sending unit that constantly sends out information, which is then captured by a receiving unit mounted in our vehicle. This means that no water personnel need access into the home to read the meter. Should anyone ask to gain entry into a home, ask for identification. If none can be provided, report them to the West Caldwell Police (973-226-4114) immediately.
Water is a finite resource and we ask all residents to use it wisely. Lawn watering should be done at night, preferably between the hours of midnight and 5:00 AM. If you see any water leaks, or have an emergency during working hours (7:00 AM to 3:30 PM), or simply have a question about the water system, please call 973-226-2300. For water emergencies after working hours please call the Police Department (973-226-4114).
