The expanded First Aid Squad facility, located within minutes of 3 major hospitals, houses the latest life saving equipment utilized by the volunteers that service the West Essex Area.

The West Caldwell Civic Center is used as a base for senior citizen activities and our Recreation Program for the handicapped and has been renovated with a barrier-free entranceway. Information concerning senior happenings and the senior minibus schedule may be obtained at Recreation Headquarters. The facility is also utilized by groups with an emphasis on community service.

Ideas for many community activities originate in our Recreation Offices on Clinton Road, with extensive new barrier-free improvements funded by a Federal Grant. These year round activities are designed for children of all ages, from the yearly Holiday Tree Lighting, Easter Egg Hunt, Swim Lessons, Swim Team, Senior Trips, Tot-Lot, Midget Wrestling, Twirling, Teen Canteen, to many sports leagues for youths and adults.

The Gazebo in Crane Park is the newest addition to our community. It was funded through the generous contributions of residents and businesses and serves as the home for many programs of our Cultural Arts Committee.

The Crane house, on Westville Avenue, is the home of the West Caldwell Historical Society, whose focus and activities are the chronicling of West Caldwell's early history.

The modern Public Library, located on the ground level of the Municipal Building, offers many services to the community, including many programs for adults and children in our new Community Meeting Room. The Library has about 52,000 print books, 3,000 audio books on tape/CD, 175 magazine/newspaper titles. 2000 music CD's and 5500 VHS/DVD videos. In addition, the library is a member of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS) which gives our residents access to collections in over 73 communities!

The Old Borough Hall on Fairfield Avenue, houses the North Essex Chamber of Commerce and several professional offices. West Caldwell has a modern nursing home facility, the West Caldwell Care Center, a 180 bed luxury nursing home, as well as Cranes Mill, a new Continuing Care Retirement Center (CCRC), with over 300 units of independent living, assisted living and nursing beds.

West Caldwell is a leader in recycling in Essex County. Residents and businesses have been responsible for exceeding the State's recycling requirements in glass, aluminum and newspaper, with a recycling rate of over 50%. The Township provides collection of newspaper and other mixed paper, as well as the commingled collection of glass, aluminum, tin and plastics. We also have a leaf composting operation that is a model for New Jersey.
