Municipal Court

The Municipal Court of the Township of West Caldwell has its offices (Violations Bureau) located in the police building at 21 Clinton Road. The hours are 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. The Court is normally in session on the first, second and third Wednesday evenings of every month at 6:00 PM and the fourth Wednesday of every month at 9:30 AM on the second floor of the Municipal Building at 30 Clinton Road. Court sessions are open to the public.

The jurisdiction of the Municipal Court is limited to offenses occurring within the Township of West Caldwell. It hears motor vehicle violations, violations of municipal ordinances, criminal offenses and violations of probation. It reviews and makes determinations with regard to issuance of temporary restraining orders as required for domestic violence matters, conducts preliminary hearings (arraignments with regard to indictable criminal offenses and refers indictable Complaints to the County Prosecutor.) It sets bail for and traffic and non-traffic cases and issues failure to appear notices and bench warrants as required. The Municipal Court does not have jurisdiction over any civil matters nor jurisdiction in cases involving juveniles.
