Welcoming Library Spaces for the Autism Community
and Their Families

In late November, the West Caldwell Public Library was awarded a $4000 contract from INFOLINK, the Eastern New Jersey Library Cooperative, to plan and implement a project entitled “Welcoming Library Spaces for the Autism Community and Their Families.”  The library is partnering with the West Caldwell-Caldwell Recreation Department, Caldwell College and the Caldwell Rotary's Interact Club.

The programs for autistic children and young adults and those with other special needs include:  The Library Corner, a series of programs for children, ages 4-10; The Library Connection, monthly programs for middle school students and Lively Library Nights for those attending the West Caldwell-Caldwell Recreation Department’s Adult Handicap Canteen. Registration for these programs is done through the Recreation Department, 5 Fairfield Avenue.

Another component of the project is our Paws to Read sessions, for children in grades 1-3 who would like additional reading aloud experiences are invited to read to a friendly dog.  Registration for this program held twice a month may be done at the Library.

Members of the Rotary’s Interact Club and the Friends of the West Caldwell Public Library will assist at each of the programs.
