The township of West Caldwell’s Environmental Commission was approved by the Council in the mid ‘70’s. It has public meetings the second Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building. For 2008, the Environmental Commission will continue to expand the Wrensch Park project, update the web site, select beautification award winners and begin new initiatives. There are seven volunteer members who are as follows:
West Caldwell Town Council is represented by Councilman Joe Cecere.. Over the past several years, the commission has worked towards the long term development of Wrensch Park into a passive park. Presently a half loop trail is being considered that will be cleared by a group of volunteers from the James Caldwell Environmental Club. A member from the NJ Audubon Society has also walked the park and will give us helpful tips on how to attract birds so that bird watching will be made available to our citizens. It also is overseeing the streetscaping along the islands of Bloomfield Avenue. It has reinstated the Beautification Award given out each year to five businesses whose property is maintained and landscaped in a level that is worthy of this award. Over the next several months, we will continue to develop this web page to keep our citizens informed of issues that affect our environment and our community. We hope to also offer healthful tips on gardening and landscaping around your home for whichever season we are in. Any input is always welcomed from the public. Gardening Tips Our first two gardening tips are on Crabgrass and Mulches. They are in pdf format and are available by clicking on the following highlighted topics. "Control Crabgrass Now" or "About Mulching." Return to this page by clicking the 'back" button on your browser. Earth Day It was first organized and celebrated on April 22, 1970 and it is still traditionally celebrated on April 22nd although some people observe Earth Day on the weekend before and after April 22nd (to provide the opportunity for more people to take part in local environmental activities) or on March 21st , the first official day of spring. World Environment Day started by the United Nations is celebrated on June 5th. Earth Day continues to get people actively involved in environmental projects and more aware of environmental issues. As individuals we can make a difference in protecting our environment just by not littering, not wasting water and recycling during the year. Global warming, the effects on our environment, is a reality and the future generations will need to cope with environmental issues that can be drastically reduced if we do something about them now. Let’s make the earth a cleaner and better place for everyone.
The Environmental Protection Club of James Caldwell High
School The Environmental Protection Club of James Caldwell High School joined Joseph Cecere and Dave Hall of the Audubon Society for a morning of community service and environmental awareness at Wrensch Park on Saturday October 20, 2007. The group, which was later joined by Mayor Tempesta, explored the park using the half-loop trail, and worked together to clear debris from the path. Using fallen branches (and lots of teamwork!), a rough border for the trail was constructed. The day was an overall success, and everyone looks forward to making the improvement of Wrensch Park an ongoing collaborative project between the West Caldwell Environment Commission and the students of James Caldwell High School, with Mr. Hall using his expertise to attract more birds.
